Conservation Hunting

Whilst the chief focus at Askival is that of game preservation and herd improvement, it is always necessary to manage populations, especially given the fenced nature of the ground and the deliberate lack of lions. Trophy hunting, management hunts and both driven and walked up bird shooting is available, subject always to conditions of grass, browse and populations. Management hunts are conducted each year with the focus on culling game that is either ageing or too abundant. These hunts form part of the management of the ecosystem. In addition trophy hunts are available with a strict focus on animals that have passed their prime, many of which are exceptional. Our style is old fashioned, with most of the day being spent on foot.

The primary focus for visitors is wild mammals. These abound, with the important exception of elephant, rhino and lions.

All hunting is managed on site by a resident professional hunter and highly experienced hunt staff, and management also let the property, on a hunt by hunt basis, to a very small number of professional hunting organisations with the highest reputation of ethical and sustainable hunting in Southern Africa. Hunting typically takes place between April and early October.

In addition a wide variety of smaller mammals, such as Banded and Slender-tailed Mongoose thrive and are there to be found.
