Our summer brings rains between November and March when the entire property is a verdant green and the weather is hot and sticky. Come April, the rains stop and thereafter, throughout the winter through to October, we rarely see a cloud. Days are warm to hot, early mornings and evenings cool to cold, skies are blue, the bush thins out and browns up, and biting insects vanish, making this period near perfect for any outdoor activity.
The lodge is available for those seeking both a wildlife experience or simply a country break in remote, undisturbed, stunning countryside. Visitors can be self-contained at the lodge, with its views over the bush and a well visited dam, and can be guided by local guides on walks and drives throughout the property. Visitors are welcome to bring their own horses though there is minimal infrastructure to them and thus “self help” is the order of the day!
Please note that whilst a paved route ascends to the lodge, it is only accessible by a 4x4 WITH low ratio gears. Notwithstanding this, lodge vehicles can deliver luggage and those that do not fancy a short but steep walk to the top!
The proprietor is an avid birdwatcher and continues to broaden the list of species seen on the property, which abounds with both residents and migrant visitors. The wider area is not well visited by birders and Askival inputs all its bird data into SABAP -the South Africa Bird Atlas Project. Within the first three years of establishing Askival, some 220 species have been confirmed on the property but there is much more progress to be made. All birders – whether amateur or more serious - are more than welcome.
The lodge is designed to be simple and comfortable but without fancy additions, giving the feel of a traditional home in the bush. Cooking is excellent and focussed upon locally sourced products, and alfresco lunches and bush dinners all go to make up a great variety for a hunt and/or a family holiday. Electricity is supplied by mains and a generator backup is available. Telephone signal is moderate at the lodge but less so on the flat, but a good wifi signal is available 24/7 within the lodge.
